Distinguished professors, scholars, and guests;
Ladies and gentlemen,
Good morning!

I am Dean of Faculty of Economics, Saburo Saito.

I am very happy to be here to give you greetings. First of all, I would like to express our hearty welcome to Fukuoka University, Japan. Welcome to Japan!

This year is the 50th Anniversary of our Faculty since its foundation. While we have walked through a half-century, we wish to make this special year as the starting year for the coming next half-century.

Our ideal is the fusion or integration of active researches and thoughtful education.
Like almost all other universities in Japan, we were eager to send our people to foreign countries to learn culture there, mainly western culture and disciplines.
While it still is important, we also wish to invite people, scholars, researchers, and students from overseas, wish to provide an attractive research environment or education programs, for scholars willing to come and stay to do joint works with us here.

Through doing that, we would like to change ourselves.

For the ideal, we set up the Center for Advanced Economic Study (CAES) at our Faculty two years ago. To commemorate the establishment of CAES, and with these all in mind, we organized this conference.

Again, I am very grateful that we have here today five prominent professors:

As you noticed from the program, many scholars from various places far-off from here come to participate in this conference. I am also very grateful for all of you to come to participate in this conference.

I hope this conference will be successful to become a stimulating conference.
Please be relaxed and feel at home to exchange your exciting ideas.

With these words, it’s time to say the opening.
I would like to declare International Conference on Econometrics and the World Economy open.
